This is a guide to stress management for police personnel who, in performing their essential function in society, encounter many stressful situations.
Abstract
First, is a definition of stress, with a review of the evolution of the word and concept, and an acknowledgment that stress is inherent to life and has positive and negative manifestations. Part 1 shows stress management from the viewpoint of the organization and includes sections on the management of change, counseling, supportive human resource management, team stress, sickness monitoring, the role of Force Occupational Health Units and Welfare, and critical debriefing. Part 2 suggests ways to maximize creative stress and minimize the harmful effects of stress build-up. Part 3 is a comprehensive bibliography of stress and related topics: Stress--General; Stress in Policing; Post-traumatic Stress; and Management of Disaster. Tables, summary questionnaire, bibliography
