Abstract
The discussion notes that employers have a legal obligation to provide safe places for employees to work and for customers to transact business. Employee assistance programs will continue to have central roles in employee mental health issues, but they could have limits under certain circumstances. Therefore, employers should consider adopting a policy for mandatory referral of employers whose behaviors or communications suggest that they are unacceptably aggressive or may become violent. Employers should develop consistent guidelines and monitoring procedures. They should consider contracting with an outside resource to manage the referral process, include appropriate information in human resource training programs for managers, and improve incident and behavior documentation procedures.
