This manual explains to female inmates what is required of them as residents of New Hampshire's women's prison.
Abstract
Inmates are instructed to abide by the rules in this manual, posted rules, and staff orders; failure to do so will result in disciplinary action, which could lengthen the inmate's stay. On the other hand, inmates are advised that compliance with prison rules and participation in academic, vocational, and other self-improvement program will be rewarded with a favorable sentence review and risk classification. The manual provides information on intake procedures and the "quarantine" phase, which involves physical and mental health examinations; DNA collection; education orientation and testing; religious orientation; and the consequences for sexual assault, sexual solicitation, and sexual coercion. In addressing the orientation phase, information is provided on risk and need classification and restitution. The manual's section on "Settling In" addresses the prison regimen and adaptation to it. It covers such issues as inmate counts, appearance, opportunities, living areas, and communication with staff. This is followed by a major section on inmate services and privileges. Another section describes the programs available at the prison. These include progressive empowerment programs, education programs, the vocational training center, recreation, the sexual offender treatment program, and the family connections center. The parole hearing is described in detail in another section of the manual. Appendixes contain prison rules, forms for various prison services and activities, and an authorized property list for inmates.
