THIS RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT PROGRAM IS EXAMINED TO DETERMINE SIZE AND GROWTH, INTAKE CHARACTERISTICS AND TRENDS, AND 'SUCCESS' AS INDICATED BY GRADUATION AND RECIDIVISM.
Abstract
POPULATION GROWTH AND FACILITY EXPANSION SINCE THE PROGRAM'S INCEPTION IN 1967 ARE PRESENTED. DEMOGRAPHIC DATA ON INMATES IS ALSO PRESENTED, INCLUDING INFORMATION ON DRUG USE. WHILE MARATHON HOUSE IS DESIGNED TO TEACH BASIC SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES NECESSARY TO PRODUCTIVE FUNCTIONING IN SOCIETY, IN PRACTICE MOST PARTICIPANTS' SPECIFIC PROBLEMS ARE DRUG-RELATED. PROGRAM 'GRADUATION' OCCURS ONLY WHEN THE STAFF FEELS THAT THE CLIENT IS PREPARED FOR SUCCESSFUL INDEPENDENT SOCIAL FUNCTIONING. DATA ANALYSIS INDICATES THAT WHILE 23 PERCENT OF PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS GRADUATE OF THESE GRADUATES 92 PERCENT HAD NOT RETURNED TO DRUG USE AND WERE FUNCTIONING WELL IN SOCIETY. MARATON HOUSE FACILITIES ARE LOCATED IN THE NEW ENGLAND STATES.
