Marijuana production in the United States, including the Appalachian region of Kentucky, has socioeconomic correlates similar to other underdeveloped areas of the world that specialize in the production of illegal drugs.
Abstract
These correlates include relative socioeconomic deprivation, demographic pressures on land, boom and bust regional economies, and regional standoffs with the national government. Following a historical review of marijuana cultivation and production in the United States and a description of marijuana's physical characteristics, the focus turns to marijuana and the public policy agenda, eradication efforts, market size, and consumption. The historical and cultural context of marijuana production in the Appalachian region of Kentucky is discussed. Data on marijuana production are provided, and consequences of such production are examined. Policy implications of marijuana production in the United States are addressed. 66 references, 24 tables, and 2 maps.
