This article reports on trends in the illegal drug market, from a law enforcement perspective.
Abstract
The challenge of 21st century drug enforcement is not just making street busts and seizing shipments from dealers and distributors. New drugs are being marketed and old drugs are being modified. Also, new delivery and distribution methods are being developed to take advantage of the Internet. Consequently, it is critical that narcotic officers know the trends in the market. This article set out to examine the trends in the narcotics market. Narcotics officers were interviewed for their insight into the supply of and demand for illegal drugs on the streets and in the clubs. The way the demand on a commodity is tracked is to check its market value. However, there is no organized commodity market for illegal drugs, so to gauge the demand research must be done by talking to those who know the drug market.
