A CLOSE RE-EXAMINATION OF AN ARTICLE BY R. MARTINSON, ENTITLED 'WHAT WORKS - QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT PRISON REFORM', WHICH STATES THAT THE REHABILITATIVE EFFORTS SO FAR HAVE HAD ALMOST NO EFFECT ON RECIDIVISM.
Abstract
TO SEE WHETHER MARTINSON'S CONCLUSION ACTUALLY TAKES ACCOUNT OF THE FACTS THAT WERE PRESENTED, THE DESCRIPTION AND COMMENTARY WHICH MARTINSON HIMSELF PROVIDED IN RELATION TO A NUMBER OF RESEARCH STUDIES ARE DISCUSSED. THE ARTICLE AS A WHOLE IS DISCUSSED IN RELATION TO OFFENDER CHARACTERISTICS, INTERACTION WITH TREATMENT SETTING, AND THE MATCHING OF WORKER AND YOUTH. SOME TREATMENT METHODS, CONCLUDES THE AUTHOR, ARE OF VALUE TO AT LEAST SOME OFFENDERS.
