Written for the inmates of Maryland correctional institutions, this handbook provides general information about institutional procedures and activities, resources and programs available through the State's Division of Correction, and the parole process.
Abstract
A section providing general information outlines the management structuce of the Division of Correction; the initial assignment of an inmate to a particular institution; the levels of custody; and the names, levels of custody, and programs of each Maryland correctional facility. A summary of rules for institutional living covers inmate responsibilities, special housing areas, infractions, and penalties. The composition and role of the classification team is explained. A policy section covers the orientation, identification cards, money, time credits, the Interstate Corrections Compact, and mail. It also covers visits, the commissary, institutional work assignment, detainers, escape, leaves, and marriage while in prison. Services described include medical and dental services, mental health services, education, libraries, substance abuse treatment, and religion. Also described are recreational activities, voluntary activities, legal services, the administrative remedy procedure, the Inmate Grievance Commission, work release, and mutual agreement programming. A section on parole covers the responsibilities of the parole commission and the stages in the parole process.
