Abstract
During fiscal year 1979 through 1980, the court of appeals had 207 regular appeals before it for consideration. Approximately 29 percent of the appeals not carried over from the previous term were from the Baltimore City circuit. By the close of the year, the court had disposed of all but 47 of the regular appeals pending before it. A total of 555 petitions for issuance of writs of certiorari were filed with the court, and approximately 24 percent of the petitions submitted were granted. The court of special appeals had 1,830 appeals before it this year, representing an increase of 15.26 percent over the previous term. In the circuit courts, law, equity, juvenile, and criminal case filings totaled 151,946. This figure also includes 2,527 juvenile cases heard at the district court level in Montgomery County. Increases were recorded in all categories of filings as follows: law filings by 18 percent, juvenile by 4.5 percent, equity by 2.3 percent, and criminal by 1.2 percent. Criminal case filings statewide totaled 39,007, and applications for review of criminal sentences numbered 270, of which 20 were withdrawn. Reported case terminations totaled 152,720 for the year. In addition, there were 21,860 dispositions of law cases statewide, of which 2,416 were dispositions by trial. The majority of trials were nonjury. The district court processed 581,488 motor vehicle cases and 458,726 civil cases during fiscal year 1980. A total of 178,284 motor vehicle cases were tried, with the balance of 403,204 being disposed of by payment or forfeiture. Tables constitute most of the report, and appendixes are included.
