The problem of missing children is serious in Maryland; 15,333 children were reported missing to police departments in Maryland in 1999, with Baltimore City reporting the most, followed by Baltimore County, Prince George's County, and Montgomery County.
Abstract
The Maryland Center for Missing Children (MCMC), a unit of the Maryland State Police, is one of 50 clearinghouses affiliated with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and receives leads and sightings from the NCMEC. The MCMC operates a toll-free hotline for sightings and leads about missing and exploited children, to include incidents involving computers. The MCMC also works closely with the Missing and Exploited Children's Association and the Vanished Children's Alliance, non-profit groups dedicated to the recovery of missing children and the support of families of missing children throughout Maryland. The article contains photographs and identifying information on missing children, abductors, and endangered runaways. It also includes a child pornography fact sheet, offers guidance for children and parents on how to avoid victimization by computer-related crime, and gives safety tips for children and school administrators to prevent child abductions. 33 photographs
