THE CHARACTERISTICS OF YOUTHS IN NEED OF INTENSIVE CARE SUPERVISION AND THE CRITERIA FOR DEVELOPING INTENSIVE CARE PROGRAMS ARE DISCUSSED, AND BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OF THE MASSACHUSETTS INTENSIVE CARE UNITS ARE PROVIDED.
Abstract
YOUTHS IN NEED OF INTENSIVE CARE INCLUDE HIGHLY DISTURBED YOUTHS WHOSE ACTIONS MAY INVOLVE SELF-DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR OR SEVERELY ACTING OUT YOUTHS WHO MAY POSE A THREAT TO THEMSELVES AND SOCIETY. IT IS STATED THAT INTENSIVE CARE UNITS SHOULD HAVE SECURE FACILITIES, WITH SMALL, MIXED POPULATIONS. AT THE WRITING OF THIS DOCUMENTS, THREE INTENSIVE CARE PROGRAMS WERE IN OPERATION. MODIFICATIONS THAT WERE TO BE MADE IN THESE UNITS ARE OUTLINED. IT IS STATED THAT BY MARCH 1975, SIX INTENSIVE CARE PROGRAMS WERE TO BE OPERATING. DESCRIPTIONS OF POPULATIONS, TYPES OF YOUTHS SERVED, COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT, PROGRAMS, AND DAILY SCHEDULES FOR EACH OF THESE UNITS IS PROVIDED.
