Abstract
Salary data is provided for judicial positions, clerks of the court, court officers, Suffolk County court officers, and probation officers. In addition, cost of living and general salary schedules and selected comparative salary and benefits information for other States are presented. In 1967 the chief justice of the supreme judicial court of Massachusetts earned $30,800 annually. Associated justices earned $29,700. In 1979 the figures were $52,000 and $50,000, respectively. The chief justice of the superior court was paid $27,500 in 1967 and $47,000 in 1979. Some of the salary data is current through 1977 only. For the supreme judicial court, the clerk of the court was paid $22,275 in 1967. The salary increased to $37,500 by 1979. In Bristol County the clerk of the court was paid $17,997 in 1967 and $32,000 in 1979. In Barnstable County the comparable figures are $11,097 and $26,000, respectively. Court officers' salaries increase according to seven steps. In 1967 a step one court officer earned $5,241 annually; a step seven officer earned $6,630 for the same year. In 1977 the figures were $8,468 and $10,152.80 respectively. Probation officers' salaries are similarly categorized according to step and further designated according to titles reflecting job responsibilities.
