FOCUSING ON THE NEED FOR ADVANCED EDUCATION OF CORRECTIONS PERSONNEL IN MASSACHUSETTS, THIS VOLUME PRESENTS A MODEL 2-YEAR CORRECTIONS CURRICULUM AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR 4-YEAR AND POSTGRAUDATE STUDIES.
Abstract
A TREND IN THE REDUCTION OF PRISONS USE IN FAVOR OF COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONS CALLS FOR A SHIFT IN CORRECTIONS FROM ADMINISTRATION AND CUSTODY TO THE PROVISION OF DIRECT SERVICES, AND FROM CONTROL AND REGIMENTATION TO THE IDENTIFICATION AND PURSUIT OF COMMUNITY RESOURCES AS THE PRIMARY TOOLS OF OFFENDER REHABILITATION. CHANGES IN THE DEMANDS THAT WILL BE MADE ON CORRECTIONS PERSONNEL BECAUSE OF THESE TRENDS REQUIRE A BROADER EDUCATIONAL BASE FOCUSING ON CORRECTIONS VOCATIONS THAN IS CURRENTLY OFFERED, PARTICULARLY IN MASSACHUSETTS. EVEN THOUGH CORRECTIONS IS SUBSUMED IN THE BROADER FIELD OF HUMAN WELFARE SERVICES, THE FIELD CONTRIBUTES ITS OWN UNIQUE KNOWLEDGE TO THE BASIC DISCIPLINES. A 2-YEAR ASSOCIATE OF ARTS PROGRAM WOULD BE AN INITIAL STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. SUCH A CURRICULUM SHOULD REQUIRE, AS A MINIMUM, COMPLETION OF 60 CREDIT HOURS. PROGRAM CONTENT SHOULD INTRODUCE THE STUDENT TO A WIDE RANGE OF SUBJECTS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND PROVIDE A SPECIAL FOCUS ON CORRECTIONS. A BACCALAUREATE DEGREE IN CORRECTIONS SHOULD BE DESIGNED FOR THE SPECIALIST IN CORRECTIONS WITH A BASIC KNOWLEDGE IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE. THE GRADUATE WOULD BE PREPARED FOR ADMINISTRATIVE CAREERS IN CORRECTIONS. POSTGRADUATE WORK IN CORRECTIONS SHOULD PROVIDE FURTHER SPECIALIZATION IN KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED TO PERFORM SPECIFIC CORRECTIONAL JOBS. DETAILS OF THE CONTENT AND CREDIT HOURS REQUIRED FOR THE VARIOUS TYPES OF CORRECTIONS CURRICULUMS ARE PROVIDED. FOOTNOTES ARE INCLUDED. (RCB)
