This volume presents program administrators' descriptions of the histories, experiences, and characteristics of parenting programs designed to help female inmates in the United States keep in touch with their children and learn parenting skills; the volume also includes a review of parenting programs in other countries.
Abstract
The descriptions are intended to assist correctional administrators in determining what programming would best suit their circumstances and to aid them during the early planning stages of program development or revision. The book is also intended for use by those concerned with women's issues and those interested in childhood development. The preface notes that more than two-thirds of women sentenced to prison have children; the majority of these offenders are single parents. Individual chapters focus on the characteristics and crucial issues of incarcerated mothers, service needs of incarcerated mothers, issues related to program design and implementation, the principles and components of individual programs, staffing, funding, program benefits, and other issues.
