STUDY IS AN EFFORT TO DEMONSTRATE A SYSTEMATIC ANALYSIS OF THE COSTS TO A CITY OF AUTO THEFT AND THE EFFORTS OF AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS TO CONTROL IT.
Abstract
ITS COMPONENTS INCLUDE CAR-DAYS LOST, THE COST OF STRIPPING AND DAMAGE TO VEHICLES, THE COST OF UNRECOVERED VEHICLES, AND THE COST OF THE UNAVAILABILITY OF STOLEN VEHICLES. THE MEASURE IS USED TO EXAMINE THE GEOGRAPHIC AND CHRONOLOGICAL DISTRIBUTION OF THEFTS AND THE SUSCEPTIBILITY TO THEFT OF DIFFERENT MAKES OF CARS. WAYS IN WHICH THE MEASURE MAY BE EMPLOYED TO EVALUATE POLICE AND COMMUNITY THEFT CONTROL PROGRAMS ARE CONSIDERED. THE STUDY IS ILLUSTRATED WITH DATA ON 7278 AUTO THEFTS WHICH OCCURRED IN ST. LOUIS IN 1967. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
