This sourcebook presents detailed information on the instruments and methods used by correctional authorities at the local, State, and Federal levels, at different stages and in different environments, to handle adult and juvenile offenders.
Abstract
The introductory chapter explores the historical origins and early use of prediction instruments designed to assess risk and dangerousness, including the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and Cattell's 16 Personality Factor Inventory. Other prediction instruments used by corrections officials are described and evaluated. Subsequent chapters analyze the use of selective incapacitation, early classification criteria used by prisons to segregate inmates, and parole board decisionmaking. The concluding assessment of existing measurements of dangerousness explores the future and current use of such instruments and highlights the moral, legal, social, and psychological problems regarding risk prediction. 2 appendixes
