Abstract
This 33-minute videotape from the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is a press conference held on March 4, 1996 to present an overview of results from drug-related research efforts supported by NIJ. The primary focus of the research was on the relationship between drugs and crime, and in particular on issues of effective interventions for reducing levels of drug abuse. The participants presented highlights of six research reports, five of which were conducted by others through grants from NIJ while the sixth, the drug-use forecasting system, is research conducted directly by NIJ. The six studies examined the following: 1) the effectiveness of treatment for drug-abusers under criminal justice supervision; 2) case management of drug-involved arrestees; 3) arrestees and guns: monitoring the illegal firearms market; 4) 1994 levels of drug use within juvenile and adult arrestee populations; 5) predicting pretrial misconduct with drug tests of arrestees - evidence from a six-State study; and 6) hair analysis as a drug detector. The press conference contained highlights from each study followed by a question and answer period.
