ANALYSIS OF THE CONCEPT OF 'FREEDOM OF CHOICE' AS IT APPLIES TO EXPERIEMNTEES AND OF THE SUBSIDIES RENDERED TO EXPERMENTERS UTILIZING THE 'CORRECTIONAL CONTEXT.'
Abstract
THIS MONOGRAPH EXAMINES THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL CONDITIONS OF PRISONERS, AMSS TESTING PROTOCOLS, THE SUPPLY OF SUBJECTS FOR AND IMPACTS OF VOLUNTEERS ON CONTROLLED EXPERIMENTS, AND THE NECESSITY OF EXPERIMENTATION. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE THE SUBSIDES AND SERVICES TO PHARMACEUTICAL FIRMS BY THE CORRECTIONAL AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. STUDY FINDINGS REVEALED THAT PRISONERS, BY VIRTUE OF THEIR INCARCERATION, ARE WILLING TO PARTICIPATE IN EXPERIMENTS AND INCUR RISKS AT RATES IN EXCESS OF FIVE TIMES THE VOLUNTARISM EXHIBITED BY FREE PERSONS, AND AT RATES OF PAY AS LOW AS ON-TENTH WHAT NON-PRISONERS DEMAND. IT WAS ALSO FOUND THAT SAVINGS DERIVED FROM PRISONER EXPERIMENTATION BY MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS, SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXPERTS, AND PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURERS RUNS INTO MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ANNUALLY AND ACCRUE COMPLETELY TO THE EXPERIMENTERS. THREE AREAS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH ARE SUGGESTED INCLUDING AN EXAMINATION OF THE OPPORTUNITY COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH DIFFERENT ALLOCATIONS OF THIS SUBSIDY NOW USED ENTIRELY TO REDUCE COSTS OR OUTLAYS OF EXPERIMENTERS.
