Abstract
The manual’s first section, “Background Information,” is intended for both physicians and hiring authorities. It provides an overview of the development of the manual and its proper use in the screening of patrol-officer candidates. Chapters in this section address the goals and objectives that guided the development of the revised manual, as well as the procedures followed in its creation; pre-employment medical screening and the law; the implication for medical screening of patrol-officer job demands; and general guidelines for using the manual. The manual’s second section, “Examination and Evaluation Protocols,” is written expressly for the screening physician. Over 50 of the most commonly detected medical conditions are discussed by name; however, the guidance provided in the protocols can be interpreted to aid in the assessment of virtually any medical condition. Chapters focus on the cardiovascular system, dermatology, endocrine system, gastrointestinal system, hematology, oncology, infectious diseases, the musculoskeletal system, neurology, respiratory system, vision guidelines, and hearing guidelines. Appendixes address medication-related impairment, participating medical specialists, medical history statement, and medical examination report. 61 tables, 23 figures, and 5 forms
