DISCUSSES THE INTERACTION OF GUARDS AND INMATES THAT LAY BEHIND THE DEATHS AT SOLEDAD PRISON IN 1970, AND EXPLORES THE RACIAL AND IDEOLOGICAL CONFLICTS SYMBOLIZED IN GEORGE JACKSON AND THE DRAMA OF HIS DEATH.
Abstract
THE ATTITUDINAL AND SOCIAL CONFLICTS BETWEEN BLACK AND WHITE INMATES AND CORRECTIONAL STAFF AND THE WAYS THESE CONFLICTS WERE HANDLED IN SOLEDAD PRISON ARE DESCRIBED. DEATHS GROWING OUT OF THESE CONFLICTS AND SUBSEQUENT TRIALS ARE PRESENTED AND ANALYZED IN DETAIL. THE INTERPERSONAL AND SOCIAL DYNAMICS OF PRISON LIFE ARE SEEN AS THE DETERMINING INFLUENCES ON BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDES OF INMATES.
