This 2001 Annual Report of the Illinois Department of Corrections (DOC) provides statistics and information on the DOC's operations and achievements in fiscal year 2001.
Abstract
One focus of the Illinois DOC in 2001 has been prison security. Security measures have included the introduction of property boxes in inmate cells to enhance the ability of staff to conduct searches and facilitate safety, security, and sanitation; the use of the Corrections Intelligence System to monitor and track security-threat group activity; controlled line movement of inmates; and changes in structure and technology to ensure that prisons operate more securely. The DOC has more than doubled the number of parole agents on the streets and completely revamped parole policies and procedures. DOC has joined forces with the Chicago Police Department to address parole violators. A new program begun in fiscal year 2001 is the Helping Paws Service Dog Program at Dwight Correctional Center; this is the first dog training program in the State to involve inmates as trainers. Significant changes in the DOC's Training Academy emphasize professionalism, accountability, and the highest ethical standards. Finally, a groundbreaking ceremony was held May 10, 2001 for the Corrections Memorial Wall, which will be a lasting tribute to the memories of corrections employees killed in the line of duty. Corrections statistics are provided.
