This article discusses the trauma of rape as experienced by women rape victims and focuses on a men's support group for male-significant-others of women who have been raped.
Abstract
An important finding to emerge from this men's group was that of the timing and interface of sequential gender-specific emotions. The men and women were moving through very similar stages but in a very different time sequence. The supporting, accepting, and secure environment of the men's group allowed for open expression of negative and ambivalent feelings. As the men and women were able to work toward resolving the crisis of rape, their relationship was enhanced and, in some cases, strengthened through the therapeutic intervention. The paper describes the men's group demographically and emphasizes the group's goals and the men's problem, reactions, and concerns. Seven references are included. (Author summary modified)
