Information from a survey of 77 mental health providers in five publicly funded programs in the Tampa, Fla. area formed the basis of this analysis of AIDS knowledge and attitudes among mental health providers.
Abstract
Results showed that the providers were aware of the main routes of transmission of HIV. However, they greatly overestimated the risks of various activities related to body fluids and physical contact and grossly overestimated the risk of casual contact. In addition, most indicated that they were not competent to deal with AIDS patients and would prefer not to care for them. The majority also favored client testing and segregated programs for HIV-infected persons. Findings indicated the need for additional staff support and education about AIDS to overcome irrational beliefs and prejudice. Tables and 13 references. (Author abstract modified)
