Ten papers, generated as a result of a workshop on mental health services in jails, are provided, including materials on research needs and specific mental health topics.
Abstract
The first paper considers psychological and behavioral pathology in jails from the perspective of a literature review and the second focuses on labeling theory and its applicability to jail mental health services. Other papers cover the implementation of the National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice assessment standards in jails; mental health services intervention models for use in jails; and the provision of mental health services to jail inmates from a legal perspective. Various service delivery models and the mental health service needs of juveniles incarcerated in jails are discussed. Possible research agendas for the study of mental health services in jails are considered, and a followup discussion of the workshop is presented. Activities in progress are described in a final section. Charts, references and footnotes are included with some papers.
