To fight the increasing international menace of illicit drug trafficking, Mexico has participated in activities sponsored by the United Nations and the Organization of American States.
Abstract
Mexico has ratified the Vienna Convention against narcotics trafficking and has promoted the multilateral agreement on mutual assistance among national customs services of Latin America, Spain, and Portugal, designed to prevent drug smuggling. Mexico has also signed bilateral treaties with the U.S., Canada, and neighbors in Latin America and the Caribbean. The country's primary concern lies in the illicit transit of drugs in small aircraft, by international passengers, and concealed in shipped containers. The Mexican National Program for Drug Control is based on the objectives of protecting the physical and mental health of the Mexican people and promoting national security and international solidarity. At the same time, the government has created the Drug Control Center to coordinate activities between the Attorney General and other Federal agencies and to act as the official link for the exchange of information on the international level.
