This report contains the job requirements for the law enforcement patrol officer position in Michigan, based upon massive job task analysis and categorization into on-the-job performance requirements.
Abstract
The Michigan Law Enforcement Officers Training Council has embarked upon a five-phase project to develop a validated selection and training system for entry-level law enforcement officers. This phase of the project involved the design and development of job-related selection and training standards. The job-related standards will confirm the validity of the presently mandated basic training program, or in the case of selection standards, will be a new addition to previously published standards. Training council staff, psychological services staff, and law enforcement officers throughout the State participated in the project. The job analysis involving 3,000 officers provided the foundation for the identification of worker requirements or behaviors which are required to perform job tasks. By emphasizing the action performed by officers, a clear link between job tasks and selection and training standards was made. The worker requirements developed by the task analysis were reviewed according to a 16-point checklist which ensured that worker requirements met standards of style, were linked appropriately to core tasks, and could be implemented as part of selection or training standards. Review panels of law enforcement officers and supervisors evaluated each worker requirement, and a second evaluation was completed by a representative sample of officers throughout the State. Worker requirements were then sequenced in logical units, and each requirement was identified as being a selection requirement, a brief orientation item, appropriate for basic training (tested or nontested), or part of advanced or specialized training. Thus, agencies can select the units which are appropriate to current needs. Four tables, 3 figures and a 23-entry bibliography are included; selection and worker requirements are appended.
