At the data communications center for State police activity in Michigan, police officers can network nationwide criminal justice data bases and disseminate information on a 24-hour basis to criminal justice professionals.
Abstract
Michigan's statewide criminal justice network is called the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN). The LEIN data base contains 492,000 names, of which 25,360 are sought on felony warrants. The data bank also contains stolen vehicle descriptions, stolen license plates, and an abandoned vehicle file. LEIN also handles the message switching needed for criminal justice users in Michigan to access other data bases of criminal information. These users include State and municipal police, county sheriffs, district and circuit courts, and county prosecutor offices.
