In 1995, the Michigan State Police will continue a program begun in 1978 by testing 11 police vehicles for acceleration, braking, top speed, ergonomics, fuel economy, and high-speed handling.
Abstract
It performed these tests on every make and model of vehicle available from the factory with a special service or police package. It ran the vehicles with a full tank of test and averaged numerous runs. It also toughened its acceleration requirements. The vehicle dynamics testing took place on the 1.63-mile road racing course at Michigan International Speedway. Overall, the Chevrolet LTI Caprice 9C1 led every category for full-sized cars, while the Ford Taurus 55A led the mid-sized cars. the Camaro and Cherokee ran unopposed. The 2 days of vehicle testing concluded with Chevy and Ford assuring fleet managers of the longevity of the long wheelbase, V8-powered, rear-drive squad. Photographs
