This report, which updates an earlier analysis of migrant cohorts in the United Kingdom (UK), presents data for two later migrant cohorts (2005 and 2006) for the "forward-view" analysis and 2010 and 2011 for the "backward-view" analysis.
Abstract
The "forward-view" analysis presents data on the current visa status for the 2005 and 2006 migrant cohorts and data on the initial visa grants for the 2010 and 2011 cohorts. For the first time, migrants granted visit visas are included. The data pertain to the main five entry clearance routes to the UK: family, skilled work leading to settlement, temporary work not leading to settlement, study, and visit. The forward-view analysis of the 2004, 2005, and 2006 cohorts composed over 5.8 million cases that represented 95 percent of all migrants granted visas (visit and non-visit). The analysis identified immigration statuses at the end of each year, so as to identify whether a migrant had valid permission to remain in the UK or whether they had changed their category of leave. Data are reported for the current visa status by visa category. The second half of the report considers the immigration histories of those who were granted settlement in 2009, 2010, and 2011, which were 185,908 cases, 229,633 cases, and 159,104 cases, respectively. The analysis traced migrants back through their immigration records, identifying the grants of leave they received until the earliest recorded grant of leave to enter (LTE) or leave to remain (LTR) was reached, i.e., their initial entry visa. This new data set incorporates the revised groupings for the data adopted for the forward-looking analysis; hence, it updates the results previously published for 2009 settlement cases and provides new statistics for those people granted settlement in 2010 and 2011. 7 tables and appended details of the analysis method and additional data tables
