This report provides background information on immigrants in the Netherlands, data from recent studies (1980's) on the number and percentages of immigrants in Dutch prisons, and detailed analyses of the problems of particular immigrant groups in prison.
Abstract
A brief account of the immigrant populations in the Netherlands and government policy toward them provides population data on the various immigrant groups and summarizes government efforts to improve their socioeconomic condition. Data on immigrants in Dutch prisons show the percentage of inmates who are Dutch, aliens, and of Dutch nationality but with non-Dutch background. The report also addresses problems in prison encountered by Turks and Moroccans, Surinamese, and Moluccans. It concludes with a general discussion of prison problems common to most immigrant inmates. They include food requirements pertaining to both religious dictates and cultural tastes, religious practices, language barriers, cultural and lifestyle differences, and discrimination. 14-item bibliography.
