A COLLECTION OF FIVE PROJECT REPORTS DATED DECEMBER 1969 TO JULY 1973, WHICH DETAIL THE DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRESS OF THIS TREATMENT PROGRAM FOR FEDERAL OFFENDERS WHO WERE HEROIN ADDICTS.
Abstract
THE TREATMENT PROGRAM, REFERRED TO AS NARA, WAS AN ABBREVIATION OF THE NARCOTIC ADDICT REHABILITATION ACT OF 1966, PASSED BY THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES. THE NARA ACT MADE PROVISIONS FOR SPECIALIZED TREATMENT OF ADDICTS IN FEDERAL INSTITUTIONS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. THE FEDERAL INSTITUTION AT MILAN RECEIVED ITS FIRST RESIDENTS OF THE NARA PROGRAM IN DECEMBER OF 1969. THE FIRST REPORT REPRINTED HERE DESCRIBES IN DETAIL HOW THE STAFF AT MILAN PLANNED TO MANAGE THE PROGRAM. IT ALSO INCLUDES THE THEORETICAL BASE, PHILOSOPHY, AND ALL ELEMENTS OF THE PROGRAM. THE SECOND REPRINTED REPORT IS AN EVALUATIVE SUMMARY OF THE INCEPTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE NARA PROGRAM AT MILAN FOR THE FIRST FIFTEEN MONTHS. THE THIRD REPORT, DATED NOVEMBER 1971, IS AN ONGOING EVALUATIVE SUMMARY OF THE DRUG ABUSE PROGRAM (THE NARA PROGRAM). THIS REPORT FOCUSES ON THE 'LESSONS LEARNED' AND INCLUDES SOME UPDATING REGARDING EVOLUTIONARY PROGRAM CHANGES. THE FOURTH PAPER IN THIS COLLECTION DESCRIBES THE TYPES OF EGO PATTERNS MOST COMMONLY FOUND IN THE PROGRAM RESIDENTS; ITS USE BY STAFF HELPED COMMUNICATE A 'SPEEDY DIAGNOSIS' AND CORRESPONDING TREATMENT APPROACH. FINALLY, A DESCRIPTION OF THE NARA PROGRAM FOR THE TWENTY MONTH PERIOD OF DECEMBER 1971 TO JULY 1973 IS REPRINTED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
