Five criminal cases in Canada are described and used to demonstrate the use of DNA analysis and other forensic science techniques in contemporary investigation and prosecution.
Abstract
Ink analysis was applied in the first case to two questionable lines in the notebook of a police detective. The second case involved the use of a footprint expert and the cast of a footprint to lead to the arrest of two men for robbery and attempted murder. The third case involved the analysis of the victim's stomach contents to determine the time of death. The fourth case entailed the use of forensic accounting to trace and recover money taken by fraud from the government of Trinidad. The fifth case was the Andrea Atkinson murder. The analysis of blood, hair, semen, and DNA led to the conviction of Johnny Terceira of murder. An epilogue describes new developments in DNA analysis and explains who they were used to clear Guy Paul Morin of the murder of Christine Jessop.
