APPLICANT ATTRITION, THE ATTRITION POSSIBILITIES AT EACH RECRUITING PHASE, AND SOME OF THE FACTORS THAT OPERATE TO REDUCE THE ORIGINAL NUMBER OF APPLICANTS.
Abstract
THE STUDY ANALYZES THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS REQUIRED OF CANDIDATES WHO SUCCESSFULLY PASS THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION, COMPARING BLACK, WHITE, AND PUERTO RICAN CANDIDATES. THE STUDY DETERMINED THAT 60 PER CENT OF THOSE WHO PASSED THE EXAM BUT WERE NOT APPOINTED HAD SIMPLY FAILED TO FULFILL ALL THE PROCEDURAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE APPLICATION PROCESS. IT ALSO FOUND THAT THE PORTION OF THE APPOINTMENT PROCESS UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT DID NOT APPEAR TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST ANY PARTICULAR GROUP.
