Abstract
THE FIRST SECTION ILLUSTRATES WITH EXCERPTS FROM THE COURT TRANSCRIPT THE BRIEF ENCOUNTERS BETWEEN DEFENDANT, PROSECUTOR AND JUDGE WHICH RESULT IN PRETRIAL CONFINEMENT. STARTING WITH THE PROCESS OF ADMISSION, THE PHYSICAL FACILITIES, PROCEDURES OF ADMISSION, THE PHYSICAL FACILITIES, PROCEDURES FOR CONTROL AND PREDICTABILITY, AND AN INSTITUTIONAL JUDICIAL SYSTEM ARE PRESENTED. HAVING THUS ESTABLISHED THE CLOSURE OF THE JAIL SOCIETY, THE FINAL SECTIONS TREAT ASPECTS OF THE NEXUS BETWEEN THIS INSTITUTION AND ITS SURROUNDINGS, INCLUDING THE INMATES' CONTACTS WITH LAWYERS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND IMPENDING DEPARTURE AS DISPOSITION OF THE CASE IS REACHED.
