This report describes the nature and 1988 results of the Regimented Inmate Discipline Program, which was established in Mississippi in 1985 as an intermediate sanction that combines paramilitary training with psychological therapy and drug counseling.
Abstract
The program has experienced acceptance and support from judges across the State and has produced a recidivism rate that is lower than for the general inmate population. In 1988, 414 sentenced male offenders completed the program, for an 89 percent rate of completion and release on supervised earned probation. Most of the offenders had committed property crimes or other nonviolent offenses; 19.8 percent of the crimes were drug law offenses and 11.2 percent involved aggression. The participants are mostly between ages 15 and 24. The availability of literacy programs as well as vocational counseling and the development of good work habits in the second phase of the program augment its basic components.
