THE RECIDIVISM RATES AND GENERAL REASONS FOR RECIDIVISTS' RETURN TO PRISON ARE DETERMINED FOR A SAMPLE OF 457 MISSISSIPPI INMATES RELEASED DURING THE FOURTH QUARTER OF 1978.
Abstract
FOR THE PURPOSES OF THE STUDY, A RECIDIVIST IS DEFINED AS ANYONE WHO IS RELEASED FROM INCARCERATION IN THE MISSISSIPPI PRISON SYSTEM AND RETURNS TO THAT SYSTEM BECAUSE HE/SHE HAS COMMITTED A NEW OFFENSE OR IS GUILTY OF A TECHNICAL VIOLATION OF RELEASE SUPERVISION. SUBJECTS WERE TRACKED AT 3-MONTH, 6-MONTH, AND 1-YEAR INTERVALS TO DETERMINE RECIDIVISM RATES FOR THE COHORT. OF THE 11 INMATES (2.4 PERCENT OF THE COHORT) WHO RECIDIVATED DURING THE FIRST 3 MONTHS, 8 WERE REVOKED PAROLEES; 1 WAS REVOKED FROM WORK RELEASE BECAUSE OF NEW SENTENCE; AND 1 WAS DISCHARGED WITH PROBATION TO FOLLOW AND REVOKED BECAUSE OF NEW SENTENCE. OF THE 21 INMATES (4.6 PERCENT) WHO RECIDIVATED AFTER 6 MONTHS, 15 WERE REVOKED PAROLEES; 2 WERE REVOKED FROM SUPERVISED EARNED RELEASE BECAUSE OF NEW SENTENCE; 3 WERE REVOKED FROM WORK RELEASE BECAUSE OF NEW SENTENCE; AND 1 WAS DISCHARGED WITH PROBATION TO FOLLOW AND REVOKED BECAUSE OF NEW SENTENCE. OF THE 37 INMATES WHO RECIDIVATED DURING THE FIRST YEAR AFTER RELEASE, 29 WERE REVOKED PAROLEES; 2 WERE REVOKED FROM SUPERVISED EARNED RELEASE BECAUSE OF NEW SENTENCE; 3 WERE REVOKED FROM WORK RELEASE BECAUSE OF NEW SENTENCE; 3 WERE DISCHARGED WITH PROBATION TO FOLLOW AND REVOKED BECAUSE OF NEW SENTENCE; AND 3 WERE RETURNED AFTER DISCHARGE UPON EXPIRATION OF SENTENCE BECAUSE OF NEW SENTENCE. TWO AND 3-YEAR RATES WILL BE REPORTED WHEN THE TIME HAS ELAPSED. TABULAR DATA ARE PROVIDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED---RCB)
