This manual provides information and guidance for those associated with the investigation of child abuse in Missouri.
Abstract
The manual's first part is devoted to Missouri law and its application in suspected cases of child abuse and neglect in both the civil and criminal context. This section is intended to assist the investigator in the proper and legal handling of such cases to ensure the resolution of each case in the best interest of the child. The manual's second portion is concerned with development of the ability to recognize indicators of abuse and neglect and provide a basic understanding of the medical implications. Part three furnishes information about the abuser and the abusing family from a behavioral perspective. This information on family relationships is intended to aid the investigator in detecting hazardous situations through observation of interactions during the course of the investigation. The concluding section of the manual focuses on investigative techniques and procedures used in conducting an investigation of suspected cases of abuse and neglect. The mechanics of reporting are explained, and sample forms are provided. Appended are a glossary of terms, a catalog of library resources available from the Region VII Child Abuse and Neglect Resource Center to assist the investigator or trainer, and a list of resource agencies and Missouri area councils on abuse and neglect and their chairpersons. Although the manual was written primarily for law enforcement personnel, it can be helpful for members of other disciplines who may become involved in the handling of abuse and neglect cases.
