The statistics presented in this report are intended to provide a basic understanding of Missouri's crime problems, their characteristics, and the law enforcement actions being taken to address the problems.
Abstract
In 1998, 247,428 Crime Index offenses were reported in Missouri. It is estimated 264,248 Crime Index offenses actually occurred statewide. This was a 0.7-percent increase over 1997. In 1998, 1 Index Crime was committed every 2.0 minutes. Of every 100 Crime Index cases, 21.8 were cleared by arrest or exceptional means. Violent offenses composed 11.4 percent of the total 1998 Missouri Crime Index. There were 28,054 Violent Index offenses reported in 1998. An estimated 30,018 Violent Index offenses actually occurred statewide. This was a decrease of 2.3 percent compared to 1997. A violent offense was committed in Missouri every 17.5 minutes. For every 100 Violent Index cases, 49.1 were cleared by arrest or exceptional means. Property offenses composed 88.6 percent of the total 1998 Crime Index. There were 219,374 Property Index offenses reported in 1998. An estimated 234,230 Property Index offenses actually occurred statewide. This was a 1.1-percent increase over 1997. Property offenses accounted for an estimated $291,202,161 in property stolen or destroyed. Of every 100 Property Index cases, 18.3 were cleared by arrest or exceptional means.
