This executive summary of the methodology and findings of a 1983-84 study of Missouri crime prevention programs reports on the extent and nature of crime prevention programming as well as police methods for supporting such programming.
Abstract
The questionnaire was mailed to each police chief by the Missouri Police Chief's Association and to every sheriff by the Missouri Sheriff's Association. Preliminary results were tabulated by the Regional Justice Information System. The 98 agencies that responded provide local law enforcement services to 3.3 million citizens. In addition to statewide data, the information on crime prevention programs is presented under the following categories: type of government, urban versus rural areas, geographical regions, and jurisdictional population sizes. Data cover the number of crime prevention programs and the percentage of agencies supporting them. The percentage of agencies providing various types of programming support is also indicated. Data are supplied on the following types of crime prevention programs: Neighborhood Watch, Operation Identification, security surveys, youth involvement, senior citizen involvement, and victim assistance. Tabular and graphic data as well as the questionnaire are provided.
