This report presents 2010 data on the magnitude, severity, and characteristics of traffic crashes that involved emergency service vehicles (police, fire, and ambulance) in Missouri in 2010.
Abstract
In 2010, 1,629 emergency-services vehicles (police, fire, and ambulance) were involved in crashes in Missouri. Four persons were killed in these crashes, and 331 persons were injured. Of these crashes, 21.7 percent (353) occurred during an emergency run. Police vehicles accounted for the majority of the crashes (74.3 percent). This finding is not surprising, since there are significantly more police vehicles in operation compared to ambulances and fire vehicles. In addition, many law enforcement units patrol Missouri roadways throughout a shift; ambulance and fire vehicles are usually stationed at fixed locations unless called to respond to an incident. Fire vehicles were involved in 10.4 percent (170) of the traffic crashes; 11.1 percent of the involved vehicles were ambulances. The primary data source for this study was the Missouri Statewide Traffic Accident Records System. 61 tables
