This report presents statistics on Missouri's experience with traffic crashes over holidays during 1992-96; the holidays include Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.
Abstract
The data came from the Statewide Traffic Accident Records System. The analysis focused on the characteristics of the crashes, the location, the role of alcohol consumption by drivers and pedestrians, the role of speeding, and the use of restraint devices such as seat belts. The traffic crash death rate in Missouri was 1 every 8.3 hours during 1992-96; it was 1 every 6.9 hours over the holidays. A total of 354 persons were killed and 21,308 were injured over these holidays during the 5-year period. Sixty persons were killed and 3,740 were killed over the Memorial day holiday. Seventy-two persons were killed and 4,396 were injured over the Fourth of July holiday. Sixty-four persons were killed and 3,545 were injured over the Labor Day holiday. Sixty-one persons were killed and 4,189 were injured over the Thanksgiving holiday. Fifty-one persons were killed and 2,511 were injured over the Christmas holiday. Forty-six persons were killed and 2,927 were injured over the New Year holiday. Tables and figures
