Abstract
This report provides the law enforcement community, other criminal justice authorities and interested parties selected information concerning the dangers encountered by law enforcement officers in the State of Missouri. In addition, it provides information concerning law enforcement manpower resource levels, in order to understand the capabilities of the State and individual communities to protect the lives, property and welfare of their citizens. In 1998, one officer was killed feloniously and one was killed accidentally in the line of duty. There were 2,204 officer assaults reported during 1998. Of those, 22.9 percent resulted in injury to an officer. In 79.7 percent of the officer assaults, the assailant used physical force, while in 20.4 percent of the cases a weapon was used. Of an estimated 17,332 persons employed by law enforcement agencies on a statewide basis, 70.6 percent were sworn officers and 29.4 percent were civilians.
