Abstract
In 2000, three officers were killed feloniously in the State of Missouri; none were killed accidentally in the line of duty. From 1991 through 2000, 32 officers were killed in the line of duty. This is an average of 3.2 officers killed on an annual basis. Of the total, 16 were killed by felonious acts and 16 officers were killed as a result of accidents or by negligence. Of the 16 killed by felonious acts, 15 were killed by firearms and 1 officer was killed by another weapon (vehicle). There were 2,173 officer assaults reported during 2000. Of these, 22.4 percent resulted in injury to an officer. For every 100 officers in the State, it was estimated there were 22.7 officer assaults. One officer was assaulted in the State every four hours. In 80 percent of the officer assaults in 2000, physical force was used by the assailant, while in 19 percent of the cases, a weapon of some type was used. Law enforcement officers sustained other injuries while performing their law enforcement duties. Non-fatal injuries resulting from accident or negligence are not presented in this report because of a lack of data. Law enforcement agencies reported 16,019 persons were employed on a full-time basis in 2000. It was estimated 17,829 persons were actually employed on a statewide basis. Of these, 70 percent were sworn officers and 30 percent were civilians. In 2000, there were 2.3 sworn officers per 1,000 population on a statewide basis. 20 tables, 6 figures, glossary
