This is the 2010 report on traffic crashes in Missouri, which assists the Missouri Highway Patrol and the Traffic and Highway Safety Division in the identification of specific traffic-safety problems.
Abstract
In 2010, there were 151,353 traffic crashes, which resulted in economic loss estimated at $3,201,711,600. Of these crashes, 0.5 percent (778) involved one or more persons being killed in the crash; 24.9 percent involved one or more persons being injured in the crash. A total of 821 persons died in Missouri traffic crashes (one person killed every 10.7 hours). A total of 54,875 persons were injured in traffic crashes in the State in 2010. One person was injured every 9.6 minutes. Speed was a significant contributing factor in 18.4 percent of the crashes; 39.5 percent of fatal crashes were speed-related. Alcohol consumption was a significant contributing factor in 4.3 percent of the crashes. Of all fatal crashes, 27.3 percent involved a person having consumed an alcoholic beverage. Of all 2010 traffic crashes, 26.0 percent involved one or more drivers under the age of 21. Of all fatal crashes, 15.1 percent involved a young driver. Drivers 55 years old and older were involved in 32 percent of the 2010 traffic crashes. Of all fatal crashes, 35.5 percent involved an older driver. In 2010, 9.0 percent of all traffic crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle; of the fatal crashes, 12.6 percent involved a commercial motor vehicle. Data are also reported on crashes that involved motorcycles, school buses, bicycles, pedestrians, fixed objects, and work zones. Seat-belt use by drivers and passengers in the vehicles involved in crashes is also reported. Extensive tables and figures
