Abstract
The international control of addictive drugs is briefly reviewed, and historic reforms in British drug laws and current legislative approaches are discussed. The general physical and psychological effects of drug addiction are explained. The effects of opiates, cocaine, amphetamines, khat, LSD, cannabis, barbiturates, solvents, and polydrug abuse are described. General drug treatment methods for abuse of these drug types are reviewed, and specific treatment methods are detailed. The description of British customs and excise acts regulating the import and export of controlled drugs includes information on evidential and procedural provisions, powers of detention and search, and penalties and forfeiture. A major topic discussed is the Misuse of Drugs Act and associated regulations, which relate to the production and supplying of controlled drugs. Appendixes contain British drug statutes and regulations and a directory of drug treatment services.
