Eight articles discuss various practical aspects of vehicles used in mobile police patrols.
Abstract
Issues discussed range from fuel efficiency to aviation patrols to the latest performance ratings for 1984 automobiles used in police work. Two articles describe the benefits of using propane gas and how this fuel, combined with energy efficient driving techniques, can save money for police patrol mobile units. The operation of the New York Police Department's Aviation Unit is detailed in one article, while another outlines the benefits of assigning patrol officers permanent squad cars. In addition, ways in which European and Japanese production vehicles are being adapted for policing in dense urban environments are described, and lease/purchase financing as a feasible alternative to vehicle replacement for a police department is examined. Concluding articles give the latest police vehicle evaluation results by the Michigan State Police and describe how a tachograph helps police determine gasoline usage in a given vehicle at any given moment. Tables and photographs are included.
