A successful program to intervene in the cycle of violence and excessive use of punishment is fundamental to the prevention and curtailment of child abuse and neglect and requires the recognition of the individual and family factors related to child abuse.
Abstract
Research by Morris and others has identified three main groups of abusive parents: (1) neglectful parents who are readily responsive to treatment by hospital staff; (2) neglectful parents who are readily responsive to a combination of hospital and community services; and (3) neglectful, unresponsive parents whose children are in imminent danger. Classification criteria relate to the parent's degree of self-control in stressful situations, the parent's involvement in active reality rather than passive reverie, the living conditions, the seriousness of the child's physical and mental condition, the parent's fortitude regarding change, and the parent's ability to use services and treatment actively. The clinician assigned to a child abuse case mobilizes and manages community and clinical services for the child victim and the family. The six systems involved are the medical system, the social service system, the criminal justice system, the educational system, the family and kinship system, and the neighborhood and friendship system. These systems need to make a joint, collaborative commitment to eradicating child abuse and neglect and eliminating the community exclusion and ridicule that abusing parents and their families will otherwise experience. 15 references
