MODEL POLICY: AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT

NCJ Number

Length

These guidelines are designed to help police agencies commit themselves and their employees to provide quality services to people with disabilities and to comply with all provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Abstract
Beyond adopting policies and procedures, agencies will need to train police officers and physically modify buildings to make them accessible to persons with various disabilities. Agencies will be required to eliminate physical and communication barriers that interfere with equality of employment and to ensure that disabled employees have the same benefits and privileges as other employees. Following a general policy statement and definitions, these guidelines overview specific disabilities, including visual, mental and psychological, and motor disabilities; mental retardation; invisible disabilities; and speech and hearing disabilities. The policy describes individual and departmental responsibilities in dealing with persons with disabilities and touches upon issues related to recruitment, screening, hiring, and promotions.
