Since most computer-related crimes are committed at the less complex level, they can be handled by experienced investigators who have received basic training in computer operations, computer security, and investigative procedures related to computer crime.
Abstract
The Air Force uses a 3-day training program expandable to 5 days for experienced investigators who have little knowledge of computers and computer-related crime. Those selected for the training have a background in fraud investigations. The first day of the training covers a survey of computers, digital computer fundamentals, storage and input-output, survey of software, flowcharting concepts, and conventional programming. The second day focuses on 'hands-on' computer time, analysis of the computer security problem, computer security fundamentals, teleprocessing network security, data management systems, and laboratory problems. The final day deals with computer resource protection and the investigation of computer crimes. A course similar to that provided by the Air Force is conducted by an FBI team which periodically visits cities throughout the country to provide a 3-day course.
