THE 15TH FRENCH CRIMINOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE CENTERED ON THE ISSUE OF BANDITRY; THE PROCEEDINGS FROM THE CONFERENCE ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
PARTICIPANTS ARE CRIMINOLOGISTS, JURISTS, POLICE OFFICERS, AND ACADEMICIANS EXAMINING THE PROBLEM OF BANDITRY FROM SOCIOCULTURAL, CLINICAL, THERAPEUTIC, AND METHODOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES. THE PROBLEM IS OUTLINED IN A HISTORY OF BANDITRY IN AUVERGNE AND IN THE RHONE AREA DURING THE 19TH CENTURY AND IN DISCUSSIONS ON THE INADEQUACY OF THE DEFINITION OF BANDITRY IN THE PENAL CODE AND ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL DETERMINATION OF THE MEANING OF BANDITRY. SOCIOCULTURAL ASPECTS OF BANDITRY TREATED INCLUDE TYPES OF BANDITRY AND BANDITS, PREVENTIVE MEASURES FROM THE 17TH TO THE 19TH CENTURIES, AND STATISTICS ON MODERN CRIMES CATEGORIZED AS BANDITRY. PAPERS ON CRIMINOLOGICAL ASPECTS RELATE TO DEFINITIONS OF THE PHENOMENON, OF BANDIT GROUPS, AND OF A SYSTEM FOR RECORDING THE CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES OF BANDITS AND THEIR FAMILIES; TO THE STRUCTURE OF THE TOULOUSE POLICE SYSTEM FOR GATHERING BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON YOUNG CRIMINALS; AND TO THE BIOGRAPHY OF AN INDIVIDUAL BANDIT ('BIG JEANNOT'). METHODOLOGICAL TOPICS CONSIDERED ARE A SEMANTIC APPROACH TO THE DEFINITION OF BANDITRY ON THE BASIS OF USAGE BY CRIMINOLOGISTS, JUDGES, JOURNALISTS, AND BANK DIRECTORS; THE SOCIOLOGICAL NOTION OF TYPE AS APPLIED TO BANDITRY; AND TYPES OF CRIMINOLOGICAL MODELS FOR PREDICTION. SUMMARIES OF REPORTS AND DISCUSSIONS AND A LIST OF PARTICIPANTS, AS WELL AS SOME TABLES AND NOTES ARE SUPPLIED. --IN FRENCH. (KMD)
